Papera Ranch – Russian River Valley
Papera Ranch has come nearly full circle. Planted in 1934 by Celestino "Charlie" Papera, the Feeney family bought it from the Paperas in the 1960s. However, in the 1970s, it was sold to a neighboring winery. The winery sold it back to the Feeneys in 2003.
Just a stone’s throw from the Carlisle Vineyard and Barbieri Ranch, this vineyard is a bit of an anomaly for old-vine Russian River Valley zinfandel. While most old-vine vineyards in the Russian River Valley are a field blend of many varieties, this vineyard contains blocks that are almost exclusively zinfandel. A few blocks contain carignane but it is typically grouped together. The two “Carlisle” blocks contains nearly 100% zinfandel. Given its cool location, this vineyard is typically picked in October.
